What types of motorcycle and scooter licenses and permits are there in Spain, and how can you obtain them?
What types of motorcycle and scooter licenses and permits are there in Spain, and how can you obtain them?
In Spain, there are four main licenses: AM, A1, A2, and A. Each one allows you to drive different types of vehicles according to their displacement, power, and the driver's age.
What is an AM license and how do you get one?
What is an AM license and how do you get one?
This license allows you to drive mopeds up to 50cc (those with a yellow license plate), whether two or three-wheeled, and light quadricycles. The minimum age is 15 years old, and there is no age limit for carrying a passenger. To obtain it, you need to be at least 15 years old, pass a psychotechnical test, pass a specific motorcycle theory exam, and pass a practical test on a closed circuit (driving between two lines of a specific width and performing a zigzag between cones at reduced speed).
What is an A1 license and what can you drive with it?
What is an A1 license and what can you drive with it?
It allows you to ride motorcycles (including sidecars) and scooters up to 125 cc and a maximum power of 11 kW (about 15 hp), always with a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 0.1 kW/kg. It also allows you to drive motor tricycles up to 15 kW (20 hp), two- and three-wheel mopeds, light quadricycles, and vehicles for people with reduced mobility. In addition, according to Article 5.7 of the General Driving Regulations, people with a valid B license (car) and more than three years of experience can ride A1 class motorcycles (B/A1 equivalence).
What are the requirements for an A1 license?
What are the requirements for an A1 license?
Be at least 16 years old, pass a psychometric test, pass a general exam (the same as the car driving license exam), pass another specific motorcycle theory test, and pass two practical exams: a balance circuit and a speed circuit, in addition to the road test.
What is the A2 license and what can you drive with it?
What is the A2 license and what can you drive with it?
From the age of 18, it allows you to ride motorcycles (including sidecars) and scooters with a maximum power of 35 kW (47.2 hp) and a power-to-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg, not derived from a vehicle with more than double its power.
How do you get an A2 license?
How do you get an A2 license?
The process is the same as for the A1. Those who have a B car license will be able to validate the theoretical exam, but will have to take the specific theoretical exam, the closed-course practical exam, and the on-road practical exam. If you already have an A1 and want an A2, the theoretical part is validated and you will go directly to the practical phase: the only test to be taken is the on-road practical test with an A2 motorcycle.
What is an A license and how do you get one?
What is an A license and how do you get one?
With an A license, you can drive any model, without power or displacement limits, but it is mandatory to have an A2 license beforehand to obtain it. Requirements: be at least 20 years old and have at least two years of experience with an A2 license. It automatically includes AM and A1, and allows driving motorized tricycles over 15 kW (20 hp) if you are 21 years old or older. In addition to the A2, you must complete a 9-hour theoretical-practical course and retake the psychotechnical test.
